I was so intent on tracking the path of the incoming storm and the lightning, I didn't give this road more than a cursory glance.
Mistake.
It looked 'okay', but the top layer was this bizarre mud/clay hybrid that completely coated my tires and left me with no traction. I knew I was in a bad spot as I slid down the first side of the hill at an angle to the road, and my only choice was to try and build up enough speed to make the top of the next side. Which I barely did.
I had to drive another scary kilometre or so further until I found a spot level enough to turn the vehicle around, and then fight my way back up the light grade to the highway. Not pleasant. Also somewhat nerve wracking for my ten year old daughter who somehow got it into her head that she would have to be the one to get out and push if we hit the ditch.
I'm very grateful I had my wife's AWD sport utility and not my rear wheel drive van. THAT would have ended badly.

Nice record shot. Well done.

Randy and I found ourselves on a sand road and were confronted with a large puddle of mud. I edged two wheels into the weeds and dragged the car through the mud. If we'd have gotten stuck we'd still be there. No cell service. Miles from anywhere. On foot. 34 degrees.

Boggles the mind.
